As the sun shone down warmly from above, the aging Shetland Sheepdog mix lay panting heavily in an open car. The roof had been ripped off, more than likely in an accident before it was towed to the junkyard and abandoned forever. However, the lack of a roof made for easy access although it didn't provide any coverage from the warmth in the sky. To top it off, Cassidy had an incrediably heavy pelt that weighed down upon her. Crossed with a German Shepherd, she had received the colouration of coat from her Shepherd father, and the weighty fleece of her mother. Luckily though there was little black in her hues so the sun didn't stick to her like glue as it did to all black creatures and objects.
Rising to her paws on all fours, chest heaving rapidly as she struggled to fight the heat that was overcoming her, Cassidy sucked in her breath and squeezed through the tight distance between the two front seats. Her coat, which made her look roly-poly and sturdy, flattened in against her skin, allowing her swift entry, and she lay then across the floor of the backseat, gathering slight shelted from the towering seats whose backs rose above her. Despite her breeding, she had inherited her mother's small build and thus look rather odd at times, with the slight bone structure of her Dad.
Ahh, that's better, the femme sighed in pleasure, stretching herself out fully on the ground. Lowering her striped cranium towards her paws, she licked around them, grooming thoroughly much as a cat would clean itself for hours upon end. Thanks to regular bathing in the lake - which was much needed in this kind of ridiculously droughted weather anyway, and grooming as such while she hid from the suns vicious rays, Cassidy's coat was in full health and to many humans she looked more like a lost pet upon the streets rather than a mangy stray.
Gus was a good provider and hunter, keeping her well fed. He himself had filled out much since they had met, she reflected, and his confidence was constantly building up, both in thanks to herself and to their beloved offspring. She smiled softly at the thoughts of their puppies. They'd been horror struck to lose Kelly, who was overcome by the heat and died from the drought. None of them had even been with her at her time of death, and for this especially, Cassidy had shed many tears. Kelly was a young naive kid, who would always follow anyone that would lead her, but she'd had a soft warm loving heart, much like her mother's and one couldn't help but like her. Her flame had flickered and died out now though, leaving them with just three puppies.
Her thoughts moved first to Soldier, who indeed lived up to his name. A brave, wilful young man he's becoming, she thought silently, seeing him in her minds eye. He very much looked up to his father, and tried to be like him in all the good, confident ways that Gus had, which, she would admit weren't many for he still held close to him the scars of his youth, and life indeed, where others had mocked him viciously for the albino white of his coat. But the odd pigment only made him even more handsome in Cass' eyes, and she loved him all the more. Soldier was truly a son to be proud of, and word had it that he had met a nice femme. Cassidy only hoped this was true; that she was someone well suited to Soldier, and not one of the spoilt, petty pups that she herself had seen on the streets. Time will tell, she mused hopefully while her thoughts wandered onto Rali.
One could barely know that Soldier and Rali were from the same litter for Rali had her spiteful, sly side where she picked on puppies that were of lesser strength or build then she herself. Priding herself on her good looks, for she appeared to be of full Collie blood on first sighting, while Rali had a loving heart, she needed to learn to err on the right side of life, and fast. Cassidy knew this, but Rali's tongue was beyond her and she didn't know how to deal with the pup any more. Rali spent most of her time with her father anyway, and Cassidy's words seemed to have no hold over her, something which saddened her greatly, but there was nothing she could do. She hadn't even seen sight nor sound of Rali since before Kelly's death, and didn't know if Rali even knew about her sister passing away. Kelly had looked up to Rali, and had always done what she told her to, even when the orders were cruel and against Kellys loving soul. What will become of you, Rali? the femme muttered softly to herself.
And then there was Zachary. Cass felt a smile spread her maw at the thought of him. Of the trio, Zach was the closest one to her for he had been born a sickly runt and it had taken all of her energies and attentions to wean him into the fine youngster that he was these days. Although he was much like Soldier in his personality, Cassidy knew that deep down Zach wasn't sure of who he was, and was always trying new ways to find out, and her heart bled for him. She longed to promise him that it would all work out for him in the end, and he'd find himself some day but ... He had to learn that for himself. There were some things that she simply could not do for him.
It's time I gathered my family to me again, she said firmly, wishing to catch up with them and hear what they had been up to lately. Hopping onto the back seat, Cassidy tilted her head back so that she gazed at the blue sky up above and released a summoning howl from her maw, one that echoed for seconds after she had finished calling.
Then she lay down to wait, certain that her family would come to her.
